What sets Cerrillos apart is how far back the digging goes. The turquoise mines in the hills above the village have been worked for more than twelve hundred years, which makes them the oldest continuously worked mines anywhere in North America, and the stone from them travelled through trade networks across the Southwest long before any European arrived. A second, much shorter boom came in the 1880s, when gold, silver, lead and zinc pulled enough money through the town to keep twenty-one saloons and four hotels in business at once. Almost none of that survives at scale. The village today is a few dirt streets of adobe and stone in high desert between the Ortiz and Sandia ranges, quiet enough that the scale of what happened underneath it is easy to miss.
