Governor Pedro Fermin de Mendinueta made the San Antonio de las Huertas grant, Saint Anthony of the Gardens, to twenty-one families on January 13, 1768. The plural name Las Placitas describes what actually formed, several small plazas rather than one village. Land watered by the acequias stayed in cultivation and the rest of the grant carried the community's livestock. The ruins of San Jose de las Huertas, the original settlement a mile north of the present village, are now held by the Archaeological Conservancy and are considered the best preserved undisturbed Hispanic colonial site in New Mexico. Behind it all stand the Sandias, where Sandia Cave holds remains from nearly every settlement period of the last ten thousand years.
