This is a city that was sold before it was built. AMREP, founded in 1961 by New York advertising and real estate men, bought 55,000 acres north of Albuquerque and subdivided it, selling more than 75,000 lots by 1977 to buyers in other parts of the country who had mostly never seen the ground. By 1970 about a thousand people actually lived on it. The place incorporated as a city in 1981, the same period Intel established its site here, and the plant went on to become one of the company's largest and the first anywhere to make six-inch wafers. Almost everything here postdates the moon landing.
