The town was founded that year, named for Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker of the Central Pacific, and incorporated in November. Luna County was carved out of Grant County in 1901 with Deming as the seat. Rockhound State Park opened in 1966, the first park in the country to let visitors carry off up to fifteen pounds of the minerals and stones they find. The Great American Duck Race, running for more than four decades now, started here.
