Las Cruces was founded in 1849 on land ceded after the Mexican-American War, in the Mesilla Valley between the Chihuahuan Desert and the Organ Mountains, and it takes its name from three large crosses that stood nearby. The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument was established on May 21, 2014 and runs to 496,330 acres around the city, taking in five separate ranges: the Organs, the Robledos, the Dona Anas, the Sierra de las Uvas and the Potrillos. New Mexico State University sits in town, and the valley floor around it is still working farmland fed off the Rio Grande.
