Mesilla, also called La Mesilla or Old Mesilla, sits in Dona Ana County west of the Rio Grande and along the old route of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It was established in 1848 on what was then Mexico's northern frontier, in the Mesilla Valley, a broad sweep of farmland reaching north toward Dona Ana where many of the town's founders had lived before. Mesilla Plaza is a National Historic Landmark, and the flag raising for the Gadsden Purchase took place there in 1854, which is the moment the town became part of the United States. The old Dona Ana County courthouse and jail, built in 1850, still stands on the plaza; Billy the Kid was tried in that building.
