Madrid stands about twenty-five miles south of Santa Fe and is the highlight of the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway, the route that runs east of the Sandia Mountains between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It was a coal town first, with more than three thousand residents and some two hundred and fifty thousand tons of coal a year at its peak, and it was known for elaborate Christmas light displays and for minor league baseball played in the first lighted stadium in the West. When the coal market collapsed in 1954 the place emptied out and joined the state's long list of ghost towns. Artists moved back in during the 1970s and reopened it as galleries, studios, restaurants and music venues, and the holiday lights returned with them.
