Paul Dowlin, who had served at nearby Fort Stanton, built a mill here around 1869, and it still stands on Sudderth as the oldest building in town; it worked as a grain mill, a general store and the post office at various points, and the village grew up around it. People came by horse and wagon from Roswell and El Paso to the river the Spanish called Rio Ruidoso, the noisy river, and the settlement shortened the name. By 1885 there was a store, a blacksmith, a post office and cabins along the water. Horse racing started in a meadow downstream and by 1947 there was a track; the All American Futurity was first run on Labor Day 1959. Sierra Blanca stands twelve thousand feet above it all.
