Put-in-Bay is a village on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, in Ottawa County in northwest Ohio, roughly halfway between Cleveland and Toledo. Rising from the middle of it is Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, a Doric column three hundred and fifty-two feet tall, the tallest of its kind in the world and forty-seven feet higher than the Statue of Liberty. It was built between 1912 and 1915 by a multi-state commission to mark the Battle of Lake Erie, fought near the island in the War of 1812, when Oliver Hazard Perry led an American squadron to victory over a smaller Royal Navy force under Robert Barclay, and it remains the only international peace memorial in the National Park System.
