Set in the Shenandoah Valley, Staunton is celebrated for its Victorian and Beaux-Arts architecture, the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, and the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Playhouse. Its walkable arts-rich downtown and surrounding valley vistas foster a grounded, unhurried atmosphere ideal for inner balance.
Winter weather over Afton Mountain closes in quickly, turning a short trip east into an unwise one for days at a time. Nothing about remote energy work depends on clear roads, and the same holds for materials delivered digitally. Support stays reachable straight through the season.
Staunton was founded in 1747 and named for Lady Rebecca Staunton, the wife of Royal Lieutenant-Governor Sir William Gooch. Woodrow Wilson was born here, and the manse he was born in is preserved. The American Shakespeare Center performs at the Blackfriars Playhouse, built as a replica of Shakespeare's own indoor playhouse. In 1908 the city did something no other American city had done and adopted the city manager form of government, hiring Charles E. Ashburner as the first city manager in the country.
