Charles B. Eddy and his brother John were running livestock and building irrigation on the Pecos in the 1880s, and Eddy renamed his town Carlsbad in 1889 after the Bohemian spa town, a marketing decision aimed at the springs nearby. Out east of town in 1898 a rancher's son named Jim White first went down into the cavern; a rock in the main corridor is scratched with his name and that year. Between 1903 and 1923 the cave was mined for guano before anyone protected it, and Congress made Carlsbad Caverns a national park on May 14, 1930.
