Josiah Hedges founded a settlement on the south bank in 1820 and named it for Edward Tiffin, the first governor of Ohio. Agriculture carried the local economy at first, and then the discovery of natural gas nearby in 1888 brought industry in quickly; the town's manufactures came to include vitreous plumbing fixtures, furniture, automobile and machine parts, forging machinery and fabricated metal. Two universities sit here: Heidelberg, founded in 1850 by the Reformed Church in the United States, and Tiffin University, founded in 1888.
