Floyd County was formed on January 15, 1831 out of Montgomery County and named for John Floyd, then governor of Virginia. The county sits high on the Blue Ridge plateau, with Buffalo Mountain reaching 3,971 feet. The Floyd Country Store is a stop on the Virginia Heritage Music Trail known as the Crooked Road, and its Friday Night Jamboree still runs every week.
